Body Dreams: Meaning and Symbolism

Dreams about the human body reach the most intimate part of who we are. Falling, losing your teeth, finding yourself naked, watching your hands transform — these dreams have spanned every era and every culture. Freud saw bodily imagery as the expression of fundamental instinctual conflicts: castration anxieties, sexual desires, fears of death. Jung, by contrast, read it as messages from the unconscious about the state of the whole psyche — the body often symbolizing the Self, that central agency of individuation. The ancient art of dream interpretation (Artemidorus in the second century) had already catalogued these dreams with remarkable precision, tying them to the earthly and social preoccupations of the dreamer. These dreams are universal precisely because the body is our very first space of existence.
